Excerpt

I stared at him as he drove back to campus. His face was chiseled as his jaw clenched. There was no sign of the dimples that flashed when he laughed. No smiling twinkle in his eye. No softness in his gaze as he flashed a heated look my way. It felt like time hung suspended, but before I knew it we were parked in front of my dorm again.

Drake cut off the engine and turned his body towards me. He unclipped his seatbelt and pocketed his keys, but he didn’t move to exit the car. His eyes had darkened to the color of melted chocolate, and a flush spread across his cheekbones. I stayed silent, trying not to push him over the edge.

“Want you more than I’ve ever wanted anyone before, but I know you aren’t ready to hop in between the sheets with me yet. You’re different, special. Gotta make sure I treat you right.” Drake reached across and stroked his thumb over my cheek as he held my chin in his hand. “Now isn’t the time for this. I know that in my head, but fuck if my body will listen to reason.”

 

About the Author

I absolutely adore reading - always have and always will. My friends growing up used to tease me when I would trail after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. If I have downtime, odds are you will find me reading or writing. I am the mother of two wonderful sons who have inspired me to chase my dream of being an author. I want them to learn from me that you can live your dream as long as you are willing to work for it. When I told my mom that my new year's resolution was to self-publish a book in 2013, she pretty much told me "About time!"

When he probed with more questions about what I looked for in query letters, I told him I liked romance novels and I basically looked for potential book boyfriends.

“Book boyfriends?” He chuckled out loud. As I watched, his chest moved to the rhythm of his laugh. “Really?” He took his last bite and chugged his coffee.

“Yes…really.” I had already finished my plate since I was too nervous to talk.

“Is that like for people who can’t get one in real life?” He was totally amused by this notion.

“No…silly,” I giggled. “Readers read books to help them escape from the daily routine of life. Many of these romance books have a swoon-worthy, gorgeous guy with really nice abs and a six pack, who can deliver wild, hot sex.” Just the thought alone made me turn red and I froze when he gave me a heated look. Then, his eyes concentrated on my lips, shifted to my breasts, then back up to my eyes when I said ‘wild, hot sex.’ I just described him and what he could potentially do.

Gravitating toward me, his eyes locked lustfully on mine. His lips were just inches away as they parted to speak and I didn’t know how he got so close to me. “I would like to be your book boyfriend,” he said with the hottest sound that could sing out of his lustrous, lick-able mouth. The puff of his breath on my lips sizzled way down to my sex. He reached out to my face, his thumb sensually sliding, feather light to touch my bottom lip with one long, slow stroke. As I watched his tongue glide over his bottom lip at the same time, I quivered beyond control.

Completely dumbfounded, I sat there staring at him and in my mind, I had already taken off my clothes for him. Blinking because that was all I could do, I wanted to say yes, but my pride and my head knew better and stopped me.

Suddenly, he broke his gaze and it felt like he had just dumped ice water over my head. “Is that what a book boyfriend would say and do?” he chuckled as he picked up our plates and took them to the kitchen.

What just happened? I was almost certain my face was deep red, because I felt it down to my toes.

He was already dressed for the OR in his scrubs, looking ... amazing. The beat beneath my chest started again and my mouth watered, as I not so subtly roamed his body with my hungry eyes. All I wanted was to feel his body against mine, get lost in where I ended and he began. It was all I’d ever want. Forever. I finally got what he meant every time he said mine. He was mine.

“See something you like?” He smirked.

“Mm-hmm.”

“Baby, if you don’t stop looking at me like that I’m never gonna get out of here.”

“Truth. Sounds perfect to me.” Now I smirked.

“Ahh fuck, you’re killing me. You know scrubs don’t hide a hard-on very well.”

I laughed. He had a point there.

Leaning down, he kissed my nose. “Text you in a bit, see how your day is going...” 

“K.”

So was this my life? I sunk back into the fluffy pillows and sighed. I wanted this to be my morning every morning.

Yep. That's an “s.” There are two of us!

We’re East coast girls separated by Long Island Sound who met in Physician Assistant School and have been besties ever since. We can safely say that thirteen miles of water does not get in the way because we talk or text, no exaggeration, at least 150 times a day. No, really, we do—about everything and nothing. Shockingly, we never (we mean never) run out of things to say.  Umm, ever. We definitely laugh A LOT and we’re a tad sarcastic. And if we’re being totally honest, one or two people might have, on occasion, used our names and ‘dramatic’ in the same sentence. But it’s hard to trust the sources since they married us.

It only took twelve years, two husbands, five kids, two dogs, and a two-week vacation in Cape Cod later to decide the romance world needed a splash of medicine. Write what you know.

So you can easily find us at 4 o'clock on Bank Street beach with a glass of cold Prosecco brainstorming. And guaranteed if we bump into you, literally, it’s only because our iPhones are glued to our hands (totally out of our control) either writing or editing our next novel (and yes, it is possible to do from your iPhone, we mastered it … damn those straight quotations).

When we are not working on our book or reading the latest angsty romance on our kindles, you basically name it and we have it going on. Soccer, lacrosse, golf, swimming, dance, gymnastics, football, chess, baseball, basketball, skiing, ice skating, school, homework, and more school.

Oh yeah, did we forget to mention our careers in medicine?

Needless to say, we realized fast that something had to go, so we opted for sleep. It’s completely overrated (yet so AMAZING) and delirium makes everything funnier. Good thing we share a brain and can pretty much complete each other’s sentences (definitely weird, we know), otherwise it might have taken us two years to write Beautifully Awake rather than one.

Looking out over the horizon, Lisa stands in a meadow. The grass is green all around her. The sun is shining, her skin is warm. She’s barefoot and the grass tickles the bottom of her feet and ankles. As she walks, daisies sporadically sprout up and brush against her bare legs. It’s as if they knew she was coming and grew purposely just to be touched by her. Her pink halter sundress, decorated with white polka dots, blows gently against her body. Her hair dances across her back as she begins to run in the field. The daisies grow at a faster rate, so fast that Lisa feels like they may be trying to trip her. She feels scratches and cuts against her skin, and she yelps. Looking down, she notices the daisies have morphed into blood red roses with thorns, except that the rose petals are razor sharp. Gasping, she tries to run again, and the roses slice at her feet and ankles. The atmosphere begins to darken and the sky turns da rk gray. The clouds shift and morph into thick sheets of darkness that cover the sky. She runs towards the oak trees on her right for shelter. The harder she runs, the further away they seem to get. She comes to an abrupt stop when her feet sink into the ground. She pulls and struggles, but she can’t free herself. She feels something tighten around her ankles as it pulls her deeper into the ground. She tries to scream, but nothing comes out. It pulls against her again, harder, and she’s sunk up to her waist now. Desperately struggling, she falls forward on her palms, her fingers grabbing a hold of the earth. She digs her fingers deep, pulling and trying to kick against whatever is tugging at her body. Tears stream down her cheeks and the sound of a sob escapes, but she cannot scream. A warm feeling touches her back and a light shines down on her. Looking up, she sees a hole in the clouds with a bright, golden light shining through. The light shines on the rope-like vines that have wrapped themselves around her legs. Letting out a hiss, they retreat from her body, back into the ground. Panting, Lisa pulls herself free of the earth and hurriedly crawls across the ground. The light grows brighter as it expands, as if hands were pulling away at the clouds, piece by piece. Getting to her feet, Lisa backs up and tumbles against something on the ground. Just as she’s about to fall, she wakes up with a start. Panting slightly, she looks at her ceiling, grateful to be lying in bed, she rubs her fists against her eyes. Sitting up, she places her feet on the floor. To humor herself, she looks down. A part of her is relieved to find her feet clean of dirt and without rope burns. Raising her brows, she pulls the sheets up and looks down, breathing a sigh of relief that the sheets are also clean. Standing up, she makes her way towards the bathroom. Stepping inside, thoughts of the man in the mirror come to mind and fear licks at her subconscious. Yesterday seems like forever ago.
