Panic set in as I listened to the ring.
I'm about to talk to Matt.
I'm about to hear his voice.
I don't even know this guy.
What the hell am I doing?
He could be a psycho stalker.
We shouldn't cross this line.
I can hang up.
I can hang up now.
Yeah, I'm going to h—
            "Hannah?"
I swallowed and slid down the bathroom wall.
            "Hannah, is that you?"
Matt's cool, clear voice swirled in my ear. It was distantly accented—New Jersey, maybe New York—and a little husky.
He sounded sleepy.
            He sounded sexy as hell.
I had the overwhelming urge to ask him to keep saying my name. Hannah, Hannah, Hannah. Help me come. Warmth bloomed between my legs.
"Okay then." He laughed softly. I felt my reason melting at the sound. "We'll play the one-sided conversation game. I'm Matt, it's nice to—" Again, he broke into quiet laughter. His voice was rich with amusement, but not warm. He sounded contemptuous. He sounded ready to laugh at anything, simply for the pleasure of laughing with his silky voice.
I couldn't help but picture the devilish eyes that must have accompanied that voice.
Green eyes, I decided. Dark green, secretive and deep like a forest.
"I was going to say it's nice to meet you," he went on, "but I guess we've technically met online. Now we're meeting on the phone. Maybe…" He trailed off. I heard some shuffling. "God, if this is you trolling me Nate, I swear I'm going to break your fucking—"
"Hey! Sorry, I—" I scooted over to the bathroom door, opened and closed it, then sat back against the wall. Brilliant. Sorry, I was soaking my underwear while I listened creepily to your voice. "—sorry, yeah. I had to go in the bathroom. My sister is asleep."
Matt was silent for a moment.
"Is that why you're whispering?" he said.
"Yeah. She's really tired. We're at a motel, we just stopped. Pretty sure the wall between this bathroom and her bed is a piece of plywood, so."
"Well… damn. I wanted to hear your voice. I mean, your regular volume voice." He chuckled. "Do you think you could risk a few words? I'll deal with your sister if she wakes up."
I smirked, imagining a conversation between my hotheaded sis and this glib personality.
"I think that would be a bad idea. But, um. Sure. What  should I say?"
"With your normal voice? How about, the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
"Okay." I cleared my throat. I was suddenly painfully self-conscious about my voice. "Um. Okay. The… the quick brown fox—"
Laughter exploded on the line. It was loud and sharp, nearly cruel.
"Oh… my god Hannah." I heard a clatter, then some scuffling. "Oh fuck. You were really saying it. The quick… brown fox… oh god." Matt dissolved into laughter again.
            I glared at my knees.
"What's so fucking funny?" I whispered.
            "Hannah. Hannah, I'm sorry."
I heard him take a few calming breaths.
"Okay," he said. "I'm sorry. Ignore me, seriously. I have a weird sense of humor. That… that struck me funny. You have a lovely voice. Go figure."
Go figure? What did he mean by that?
"Look, is there a reason you wanted me to call, or were you just looking for some late night entertainment?"
"Pretty sure this classifies as early morning entertainment, Hannah."
"Okay. Well whatever. Look, I'm not sure why I—"
"I can't stop thinking about you."
            His words stopped me cold.
His words, and something in his voice. Honesty.
"What we did," he continued. "Or what you did to me…"
My throat went dry. What I did to him. It should have grossed me out, the thought of a stranger beating off to a few details about my body, but it didn't. It intrigued me. The heat between my legs pulsed.
"You know what I'm talking about," he insisted. An edge came into his voice at the slightest provocation.
            "Y-yeah," I managed. "Yeah."
            "You enjoyed it."
            "Yeah."
"You said you wished I were pounding into you."
            "Yeah…"
I couldn't believe this smooth-talking stranger was dictating to me how I felt.
            I couldn't believe I was blindly agreeing.
And I couldn't believe my considerable vocabulary had suddenly been reduced to "yeah."
"Hannah, you made me come so hard. And I did it again, thinking about you. Let me return the favor."
His words hung in the silence between us.
Return the favor. Help me come.
            "Yes," I whispered.

Forget Me Not (Lily's Story)

This is a coming of age story, but it isn’t always sweet and innocent. If dirty talk, bedroom toys, and threesomes offend you… this is not your book. “No one tells you when you start school just how homesick you will be, or how hard it will be to start life over with no direction and no friends or family. No one says that becoming your own person is terrifying.” I never wanted anything but Derek, my brother’s best friend. When I chose a college, it didn’t seem to matter that he would be an hour away. We could survive it. After all, we were in love. But almost immediately, things change between us. I blame myself. Maybe I’m just not sure how to be a girlfriend and independent. Life seems to be getting away from me – and then there’s Jack, the guy down the hall. He’s rude and vulgar and my parents would be shocked by him, yet every single time I see him, I feel like I’m being pulled toward him. It’s physical, sure, but there’s something in Jack’s eyes – and I want to know him. I know I don’t always make the right choices, and I’m the only person at fault when everything falls apart. How do I tell Derek, the guy who was supposed to be everything, that I don’t feel like fighting for him anymore? And do I run to Jack, when I know his past is way too much for me to handle when I’ve just turned 19? Finally, where do I end up in all of this? Can I be more than just someone else’s idea of what I should be?

Lily of the Valley (Jack's Story)

Jack’s story isn’t pretty. He’s suicidal, depressed, and he uses meaningless sex and alcohol to survive. However, the story is about finding light in the darkness, but sometimes the road there isn’t always easy to walk. “No one tells you about pain. They tell you that it hurts, that sometimes it’s consuming. What they don’t tell you is that it’s not the pain that can kill you. It’s the uncomfortable numbness that follows, the weakness in your body when you realize your lungs may stop taking in air and you just can’t exert enough energy to care. It’s the way taste and color and smell fade from the world and all you’re left with is a sepia print of misery. That’s when the shift starts – the movement from passive to active. I fall asleep, hoping that the morning will bring back the pain. At least the pain is a thing.” I’m a plague, a cancer. My mom is dead – and my father is in prison for it. I survived high school because college was my way out. I needed to escape, to get away from my family and the people who tortured me, but it hasn’t grown any easier. I don’t pretend that I’m a good person. I drink far more than I should, and I use my best friend, Alana, because together, we thrive on destroying each other – as well as the parts of us we hate. I don’t believe in love, but sex is fun and it also makes me feel something. The morning I see Lily, the beautiful princess who smells inexplicably like strawberries every time I see her, I realize I’m in trouble. I should hate her. I want to hate her, because the alternative terrifies me. However, as she continues to crash into my life (often literally), I can’t avoid feeling something that is the one thing I swore I would never feel. I can’t fall in love, because people like me don’t live in a world where love saves anyone. She just won’t go away, though, and I don’t know if I can keep running. The voices and the darkness hover over me and they threaten to bring me back to the safety of my hate, but the stupid scent of strawberries lingers on the horizon, as something like hope.

Blue Rose (Alana's Story)

Warning: This book deals with topics of abuse and may trigger reactions in people who have experienced those things in their own lives. It remains a story about healing, but it’s not always an easy journey. “Four. My life has been shaped by four people. Four men, to be more specific. My father, my stepfather, my best friend, and my boyfriend. The first two shaped it in horrible ways, but what I am, who I am, is all because of four men.” Over the last twenty years, I’ve learned how to keep secrets. It doesn’t really matter, since everyone already seems to think they know everything about me. So I hide. I avoid confrontation, I treat Xanax like a magic pill that will make it all go away, and I become everything they think I am. A slut. A whore. Nothing but trash. I can only name two guys who have ever made me feel like I was more than that. Jack is my best friend and I’ve loved him since I met him. Now, though, he’s in love… with someone else, and I guess I need to get over him. Somehow. And then there’s Dave. The guy I never gave a chance. The guy I used almost as much as people used me, because I wanted to pretend I was someone worth loving. Two years have passed since we last spoke, but I don’t know how to stop thinking about him. My new therapist is making me face my past, and she tells me that life inevitably changes without our permission. I believe it, but I know what I am. I hear what she’s saying to me, and I want to try again with Dave, to help Jack find joy, to love myself, and to move on. I just wonder if anyone can do that, really.

Star of Bethlehem

This is a holiday novella-length story that follows Forget Me Not and Lily of the Valley. “With you, Jack, it was the first time I ever felt real. It was the first time anyone looked at me and saw substance. It was the first time I wanted to make someone see me.” Jack: New Year’s Eve. I’ve somehow managed to get here, and now I’m wearing a hideous and unreasonably itchy sweater, because I want to impress Lily’s family. I want to do anything for this girl who has made me believe in second chances. Lily: The house is beautiful and shining with light, but it feels empty. At least until Jack gets here. I know how desperately he wants this – a family, love, a home. If I can be the person who can give it to him, it’s all I need, but I hope I can keep him from seeing how hollow it all really is.

Orange Blossom

“I’ve never understood a year. A year was always a measurement of something bad for me. A year in my father’s prison sentence, a year since my mom’s death, a year left of school before I could get far, far away from here. Now, as I look down the end of my college career, with only a little more than a semester to go, a year seems like something magical. It has been a year since Lily chose me, since she sat with me on the old swing set and made a decision that I was worthy of her. And every minute of the entire year has been better than the last.” You already know their stories: Lily, the perfect princess, always living someone else’s life. And Jack, the broken boy, who had stopped believing in hope. Somehow, though, they found each other and what was one night blossomed into a love story. Now, a year later, Jack and Lily are dreaming of the future. Despite all of his promises to himself that he would never be indebted to anyone, Jack makes a new promise – this time to Lily – that he will be there for her forever. But when life unravels for them, he starts to pull away, and Lily worries he’s out of reach for good. When Jack does the unthinkable, Lily is left destroyed. Is it possible to have a happily ever after? Does love ever really save anyone?

Ambrosia

Four years. One night that was supposed to be an escape turned into four years. And now, four years is about to turn into forever. Lily was never anything special. A perfect girl from a perfect world living an empty life. She was lost, thinking she knew who she was and what she wanted. She thought she knew love, but then there was a boy. Jack has been through Hell. Watching his mother die - at his father’s hands - will never leave him. He had given up on living a life, figuring he would drink himself to death, if he didn’t give in to all the voices telling him to kill himself first. And then there was a girl who smelled like strawberries. Two years have passed since Orange Blossom. Jack and Lily are only months away from their wedding and their journey is about to come to an end. Join them in the final title in the Flowering series, a story of growing up, of finding yourself, and of “blooming.”

“Hey, it’s my favorite client.” Elise Carroll grinned and dropped her briefcase so she could scoop DeeDee, her secretary’s four-year-old, into her arms. Kim looked up from a file open on her desk, her cheeks striped by dried tears. “Can you play with her for a couple minutes?” Uh-oh. More domestic drama—the last thing Kim needed. “Okay, but I cannot be late for that man.” Elise walked into her office. With the door open, Kim would be able to watch her daughter from across the hall. “What man, Auntie Leese?” DeeDee asked, her corn-silk hair glinting under the office lights. Elise pointed at the magazine on her desk. “Him.” DeeDee reached for Philadelphia Magazine, the cover showing a handsome man in a black robe. The headline read, “Philadelphia’s Newest—and Sexiest—Judge” and beneath that, in smaller letters, “Blackjack McIntyre moves from the US Attorney’s office to his own district court.” “Who’s dat?” DeeDee inspected the photo. Elise laughed. “Just the latest guy to think a black robe makes him right all the time.” She set DeeDee down on the carpeted floor. “You want to color, sweetheart?” “Sure!” Elise pulled some paper out of the recycling bin, and after checking what was printed on it, spread it out on the floor, blank sides up. She found the crayons she kept in her desk for DeeDee’s visits. She checked her watch. “Oh, lord, look at the time. If I don’t leave immediately I’ll be late for him.” She pointed at Blackjack McIntyre, scowling at her from the cover of the magazine. Kim grinned. “I can’t wait to hear all about it. Details, I want all the details. Is he as good-looking as in his press conferences?” “Not you too.” Elise threw the magazine onto Kim’s desk. Jack McIntyre’s blue-black hair and chiseled jaw mocked her from the cover. Superman in a judicial robe. “I don’t plan to be there long enough to look at him. Five minutes, tops. He grants my motion, and I’m out of there.” “Oh, please. You know he’s seriously hunky. And the article says he’s not dating anyone at the moment.” “Well, based on the women he’s been seen with, I’m not his type. Good thing because I have no interest in dating him or anyone else right now. I want to focus on making partner. And you’d better focus on getting your daughter to day care.” Another check of the watch. Shit. There’d better be a cab downstairs or she’d be late. On her way back into her office, Elise looked at the papers on the floor. DeeDee had drawn a figure in black. Either it was the Honorable Jack McIntyre or a vampire bat. Hard to tell.

Kota's Review

This story is a fantastical romance that is based on the principle of love at first sight.  Only this time the matter is highly complicated because of the professions of the two main characters.  Meet Jack McIntyre, a Judge who down to his bones is in love with Elise Carroll.   Elise is a lawyer prepared a case to be heard in front of Jack.

The story proceeds along while Jack tries to convince Elise that his feelings are real, and she tries to convince him, that he is nuts!

This is my first read of a Magdalen Braden story.  I found that the story is reminiscent of old school romance novels.  Certainly it was a contemporary story, but it is told in more of the traditional Harlequin style, for mine.    The story was sweet and highly detailed.  The style and tone were good, but not my personal preferred cup of tea.

The point of difference I guess for this story was that the man was the hopeless romantic with the perfect beliefs of this relationship.  Elise on the other hand was the hard arse who was happy to sate her sexual needs.  I mean if Jack was s desperate to be with her – let it be on her terms, right?

This story was filled with legalese, but not enough to overwhelm the reader, but enough to generate a clear conflict of interest within the relationship.

This story was pleasant enough, but unfortunately for me, I found it seemed to drag.  I struggled with the initial premise, because I am not ‘that’ much of a romantic.  The details were excessive for me, leaving little to my imagination.  There was nothing wrong with this story, or the author’s style – it just didn’t appeal to me on the excitement scale.  I am rating Blackjack and Moonlight (the title reflects the pet names for the characters) 3 & ½ hearts.

3 & 1/2 hearts from Kota

Scoring Wilder by R.S Grey

Synopsis

What started out as a joke— seduce Coach Wilder—soon became a goal she had to score. With Olympic tryouts on the horizon, the last thing nineteen-year-old Kinsley Bryant needs to add to her plate is Liam Wilder. He's a professional soccer player, America's favorite bad-boy, and has all the qualities of a skilled panty-dropper. • A face that makes girls weep – check. • Abs that can shred Parmesan cheese (the expensive kind) – check. • Enough confidence to shift the earth’s gravitational pull – double check. Not to mention Liam is strictly off limits . Forbidden. Her coaches have made that perfectly clear. (i.e. “Score with Coach Wilder anywhere other than the field and you’ll be cut from the team faster than you can count his tattoos.”) But that just makes him all the more enticing…Besides, Kinsley's already counted the visible ones, and she is not one to leave a project unfinished. Kinsley tries to play the game her way as they navigate through forbidden territory, but Liam is determined to teach her a whole new definition for the term “team bonding.” A fun & sexy New Adult Romance (age 17+)

Excerpt

But just before she stepped inside, I heard the same sexy voice that I’d heard the previous night— the voice that said, I'm sexy and I know it. "Morning ladies." Every single girl froze and we turned in unison. Liam Wilder was standing a few feet away wearing workout gear and a friendly smile. Of course his friendly smile could easily be misconstrued for a take-your-panties-off smile, so it's a wonder we all managed to mutter shocked hellos. I guess he'd pulled up in the parking lot a few minutes after we did. I peered behind him and saw a black Mercedes SUV parked in the spot closest to the field house. A photographer was snapping pictures on the other side of the fence. Jeez, they wake up this early to get pictures of him? "Oh, hi Liam." Tara smiled wide. I shot Becca a gag-me face. "You guys should probably call me Coach Wilder while we're at practice," he admonished. I had to fight to keep from cracking up. The shocked look on Tara's face was absolutely priceless, but it still wasn't enough to make me forget the awkwardness of the situation. I couldn't look up at him. The last time we'd spoken, I'd literally asked him to show me his tattoos, which we both knew really meant I wanted him to show me his soccer balls. Hah. I'd have to tell Becca that one later. I tugged her and Emily forward without acknowledging Liam and headed for the conference room. Thankfully, Coach Davis was there already and Liam didn't follow us in.

Iva's Review

Scoring Wilder by R. S. Grey is a New Adult Romance with some steamy sex scenes and drool worthy soccer stars. The story is well thought out and engaging, and the characters very well balanced and likeable.
For rising soccer star, Kinsley Bryant, making the Olympic team is a strong possibility. As long as she doesn't get side tracked by her new coach - soccer superstar Liam Wilder.

Liam Wilder has the reputation of a party boy with a different woman on his arm each week but is it an interest in Kinsley or her soccer skills that has him keen to help her with her soccer drills?

Okay, so I am going to admit some bias here regarding the story due to the content. I love soccer and play myself. I also met my husband through soccer, and we often joke that the beginning of our relationship was all about soccer, sex and sleeping. Scoring Wilder was always going to appeal to me because of that, but R.S Grey has written the book so that even if you have no love of soccer, you will enjoy it.

R.S. Grey is a beautiful writer. Her books always whisk you away to reading land and it is very hard to jolt yourself away from the characters and story. Scoring Wilder is no different and will have you in reading heaven in no time. The story is told solely from Kinsleys perspective and is based around her first year playing college soccer.

Kinsley Bryant should have an ego the size of Texas; she is the number one recruit to come out of high school, she has a good chance at the Olympics and she has just been listed as one of the sexiest women in sport. But Kinsley has been dealt a massive blow twice in her private life which, along with being solely focused on soccer, keeps her level headed. She is a fun character with witty one liners and internal thoughts that will have you sniggering along with her.

Liam Wilder is definitely worth getting wild over. He reads hot! There is just enough bad boy mixed in with his new found maturity that makes him a perfect male lead. And he plays soccer and doesn't treat girls soccer as second rate, so he has my vote as a book boyfriend.

Minor characters play a huge part in the book and are just as likeable as the main two and provide a perfect backdrop to Liam and Kinsley and the development of the story.

Scoring Wilder is a feel good story. One that will suck you in and make you keen to watch the FIFA World Cup, just to see if you can find your own Liam Wilder.

Iva rates Scoring Wilder 4 & 1/2 hearts

Blindfold Fantasy

by D.L. Roan

Release Date: June 17, 2014
Genre: Erotic Romance ~ Menage

~ Back of The Book ~

~ KOTA'S REVIEW ~

Blindfold Fantasy takes all of the elements of DL’s previous books that I love, and wraps them up in this wonderful and sexy story that makes you swoon.

This is the story of Jayne, Devin and Blake. Throw in Jayne’s best friend Roxy and this story keeps you on your toes.

This is a MFM Erotic Menage that DL makes seamless, the way these characters fit and complement each other is perfect.  They each have their own flaws, but the balance of each of them makes those imperfections perfect.

Jayne is an architect who manages to secure a big contract.  This contract results in some significant life changes for her and to celebrate, Roxy organises a fun time in Vegas, complete with a gigolo to help Jayne ‘live a little’…  While Jayne is resistant to the idea, she eventually decides to go with it and the outcome changes things for her, that’s for sure.

Blake is the hot bad boy who is best friends with Devin, a little lost after his life takes a turn and who just happens to be the gigolo Roxy has hired.

Devin is the reluctant CEO of Silverland industries who needs his best friend and previous project manager to come back and help manage Devin’s new project.

Devin and Blake have a long past together, which includes business and pleasure.. so when circumstances come to pass that require some creative management, Devin steps in.

When you think about book boyfriends most people have a type – some love the corporate rich alpha, others the tatted and pierced bad boy – well hell Ms Roan has served both to us on a platter.  I am definitely a Blake fan.. but when you make a Blake and Devin sandwich – it makes for a very satisfied reader – just sayin’.

Ms Roan has written a complex story that has many plot points that keep you guessing well beyond the sex and relationship side of things.  The dynamics of the relationships between all of the characters have such depth that the emotion is bubbling off the page.  Roxy is a firecracker who truly needs her own story.  Jayne is the perfect mix for these guys, she is vulnerable, yet strong and independent, she is giving and well – whodavthunkit – a little adventurous as well!

Sex is a significant part of Ms Roan’s storytelling, but it never solely dominates – each story is well crafted and so much more than an erotic novel.  Oh don’t worry – its erotic – it is suggested that you read it next to your man – or your BOB…  keep a supply of batteries handy – you know just in case you like to watch… or read… or imagine…  *fans self, it’s getting hot in here again, let me step out on the balcony…. Or over to the window….  Or………  are you starting to get the picture?*

Anyhoo – what can I say – I am a fan of Ms Roan’s work – if you haven’t read Second Chances or Second Nature – get onto those ones! I also have had the pleasure of getting to know DL through this blogging game and wish her nothing but success.  In the age of full disclosure – you guys need to know that I have just a slight crush on her awesomeness…  that said – my thoughts about this book are my honest ones.

I found this story easy to read – compelling in its telling – the twists and turns added to the complexity of the storyline which made it thoroughly enjoyable.  I love DL’s style and this story does not disappoint.  I did however also find that there were some elements of the story that I would have appreciated being further explored, those being Roxy’s story and Blake’s backstory. I personally found the relationship development very convenient and felt like some additional angst was missing in the start.  The angst that came later was needed yet I felt this was explored and wrapped up a little too rapidly.

These are really minor critiques and fully my personal preference.  At the end of the day Blindfold Fantasy was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and one that I can see myself re-reading when I get the chance.  DL, thank you for trusting me with an Advanced copy and congratulations on all of the success that comes your way – you are truly deserving – and if ever you think you aren’t – chalk it up to world domination!
Blindfold Fantasy gets a very accomplished 4 ½ hearts from me….
