Kota's Review

Sometimes ya gotta laugh is the story of thirty something friends Jordan, Gabby and Chris as they work through their personal demons on their way to some self discovery.

Jordan has space (aka commitment) issues, Gabby has family and relationship issues and Chris is battling some addictive behaviours.

These guys have been tight for years, with Jordan and Chris going way back.  They make a point of getting together every Monday for happy hour and connect regularly in between… until they don’t.  Are their friendships changing as they move on with their lives, are they growing apart as they mature, or are their inner (and outer) demons so much that they can’t confide in their friends anymore?

This story is interesting – each person having their own path to follow with dramatic effects.  The dynamics keep you guessing as to how their stories will end.  There is emotional twists and turns of varying degrees, as the guys come to the realisation that sometimes you just gotta laugh!

This is my first Timothe Davis (and its his debut!) book.  I am uncertain how I feel about it.  This story was engaging, it had the potential to be gripping, but the tone of the story lost that for me.  The story is written in the first person when telling Jordan’s story, but was narrated in the third person when telling Gabby and Chris’s stories.  This became confusing at times especially when it sometimes fluctuated from paragraph to paragraph.

As the story was primarily set around Jordan, I realise the test was how much energy he should invest in friendships he may have outgrown. However, his strength of character was questionable for me when the indicators from his friends about the severity of their issues were bleedingly obvious and yet he backed off so many times.  That said he came through when needed!

I read this as an ARC.  There were numerous and distracting editorial errors which occasionally impacted on my ability to follow the story.  I hope these have been corrected prior to publishing, as the story on its own doesn’t need to be impacted by these.

I also found the end very disappointing.  I understand the way the plots resolved, but feel that it was rushed, unexplored adequately and left many unanswered questions.  It seemed that the focus was on the build of the plot, with a failure to pay enough respect to the resolution.

Overall – I didn’t not enjoy this story – but the deficits in the writing structure distracted this story from reaching its true potential.  I rate Sometimes ya gotta laugh 3 hearts.

Author Bio

Timothe Davis is a music-loving, martini-drinking, night owl. He spends his days confined within the walls of
corporate America but (not so) secretly harbors dreams of writing best-sellers and getting books adapted to movies. Thank God he's wise enough to have a 401K plan.

You can find him wandering around his loft most times of the night. His friends say his sarcasm belies a warm heart and he's tried MATCH.com not once but twice.

“Sometimes Ya Gotta Laugh” is his first novel. It's a fictional story of love, friendship, acceptance, and the journey we take to make ourselves better each day. He hopes that those who purchase it will enjoy reading it as much as he enjoyed writing it.
