Anna Brookes also known by her Professional name 15, did what she had never done before.
She didn’t kill her target, HiT 149.
HiT 149 better known as Ben Pearson did something he had never done before.
He fell in love with Anna Brookes.
In Hit for Freedom, the sequel to HiT 149, a nemesis so powerful, terrifying and frightening is threatening the safety of Anna’s love, Ben and his hometown, St Cloud.
15 must deal with a force that may be too dangerous even for her skilled ways. With limited information on her new HiT, she willingly infiltrates his trust to acquire the knowledge she needs to implode the operations of the deadly man.
"What you saw earlier must be playing around in your head. But you didn’t scream or freak out which tells me you are either very strong or very broken. Either way, the information I give you from here on in, you must understand that I will kill you if you choose to repeat it to anyone." I’ll let him believe that. ~ Anna Brookes
Kota's Review
Oh MAN!!! Another cliffhanger…
So in HiT for freedom, we see Anna entrenched in evil relationships and tangles. She needs to understand what is going on in St Cloud to make sure that she can keep Ben safe. Anna will stop at nothing to ensure his safety.
This story is more about the thriller, suspense and risk elements than it is about the relationship between Ben and Anna, although that does underpin the whole story. While this relationship plays its integral role in the story, the sex is few and far between. Depending what you are looking for, the lack of sex in this story is not disappointing (and let me say lack of – doesn’t mean no sex!!)
This is a story that relied on the plot and this plot delivered, it kept you turning pages and needing to know more. By book three – and with the current cliff hanger – I am keen to see where this story goes – particularly with the reveal of the newest plot twist. But in true Margaret McHeyzer style – more questions become apparent, rather than answered,…. But again to discuss them further would lead to spoilers – and I am trying really hard!!
On this outing for Anna – I am giving it 4 hearts. Many of the previous issues/concerns seem to be fixed, so this story does not have you being sidetracked by these issues - you are pretty much good to go.
Congratulations Margaret on writing a series that focuses on an exceptionally gifted girl who chooses to partake in this lifestyle due to circumstance, but is talented, strong willed, and disciplined when it counts.
I have fallen in love with Anna and Ben - and have to keep reading to see if they will ever get their Happily Ever After..

Hit 149 - Anna Brookes First Chapter (HiT #1)
Synopsis
‘I’m standing here, on top of the building and I need to remind myself to breathe. It’s not like I haven’t done this 146 times before. It’s not like I’m NOT the best in the business. I am the best at this because as sick as it sounds, I WANT to be here. I love doing what I do. I can tell you that I have been in this line of work for the last 13 years. I didn’t quite fall into it, I actually sought it out. I am undoubtedly the best in the industry. I am respected amongst all the big players. I am the biggest player of them all. If a rookie tried to come along and show me up as an example of their capabilities, it didn’t take long for me to work out what they were about.
There is no hesitation. No second thoughts. No doubts. No emotions. No feelings.’ ~ Anna Brookes
Anna Brookes is the most dangerous woman that you hope you will never know.
Her life of danger started the day she turned 15.
The 13 years that follow shapes her life to have her become the most deadly and lethal woman.
HiT 149 becomes her most difficult target. Does she pull the trigger or does she risk becoming the target herself?
Kota's Review
Margaret McHeyzer has written the basis behind a fascinating series. Anna Brookes is an extraordinarily gifted woman – who just happens to be an assassin. Her record is the stuff of legends, and her skills unsurpassed.
Anna meets Ben, and when their paths cross, fireworks happen, but can Anna ever truly commit to one person given her lifestyle? Anna’s relationship with Ben takes her to her childhood home town, and trouble follows her there.
This story is fully of suspense, dram, intrigue, lust, sex, cold blooded killing and the promise of so much more. It really is a great variation to the romance genre.
The characters in this story are complex and they have the beginnings of great character development. The intricacies of their relationships and dynamics meant that for me, more time needed to be spent understanding these characters – I understand the need for intrigue and suspense, but…
Margaret has the potential to be a great thriller storyteller, there were elements of this version that frustrated me a little, particularly the editorial errors, and the use of English (UK) words in a book dominated by English (US) – particularly given it appears to be set in the US.
The intensity of the plot and as it unfolds really had the potential for this to be a much more substantial novel – however, that would impact on the ability to become a trilogy/series. I understand the need for this to continue – but it left me with many unanswered questions and left me wanting – but not in an anticipatory kind of way. Oh and the instalove – hmmm, a bit too much too soon.
Hit 149 has given me the basis for a great story – but seemed a little unpolished. I am definitely looking forward to see how Margaret McHeyzer has this plot unfold.
I am giving HIT 149 a high 3 ½ hearts |
Anna Brookes - In Training (HiT #1.5)
Synopsis
Imagine watching your Father die in front of you because two men were sent to take you. The two men were sent by Roman Murphy, the boss of Hunter Inc. The sole job of Hunter Inc is to train and produce assassins.
Anna Brookes, a 15 year old girl with a love and panache for precision and handling of weapons was sort out by Hunter Inc.
One evening she encounters Lukas, a man she saves but a man who ultimately goes on to save her.
The months that follow see Anna's intuition heightened and defined.
She is forced to deal with techniques that no ordinary 15 year old girl should ever encounter in their lives.
Anna Brookes - In Training picks up from the moment she killed Damon and Nox in HiT 149.
“I’ll agree that you, Anna, are not ordinary at all. You are simply… extraordinary” ~ Lukas
Kota's Review
This novella provides an insight in to Anna Brookes’ training. It essentially fills in the gaps between Anna as a young person, to the Anna we know today. Margaret takes us in brief on how Anna received the training she required to become the best in her business, and the relationship she had with her mentor.
This novella answered some questions that I had after HIT 149 which was great, but it then also left many more in its wake. This novella was essential to providing credibility to this series and ensure that we enter Anna’s journey in the next installment with a better understanding of how she came to be.
Again, unfortunately, with a character as complex as Anna – this story just skims the surface, I hope the unanswered questions are resolved in the next installment.
This Novella was integral to the story development, but almost left more questions unanswered, than resolved!
Again – this is sitting at a high 3 ½ |
About the Author
I love to read. I'm a huge fan of books and when I start reading anything, I usually forgo doing everything else, I mean the housework will still be there in the morning (right?). When I love a story or book that I've downloaded, I usually refrain from sleep and am crabby the next day - but only until I pick my iPad up and start reading again!
I was recently described by a reviewer as my writing style is Chick-Lit with an Edge. I liked that so much that that's the way I describe the genre I write.
My goal when writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it's only for a split second.
I'm a go with the flow sort of person and don't really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don't usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I'll be happy to accept.
I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. Every Friday I spend it with my girlfriends where we have 'cake day', which usually consists of a yummy yet nutritious lunch, quickly destroyed by a delicious and devilishly good cake and a caramel latte.
I really don't like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don't believe that's necessary, I mean life is hard enough as it is!
Three things you need to know about me; 1 - I'm fiercely loyal and will bend over backwards to help. 2 - I love chocolate, like A LOT and 3 - I have a huge crush on David Gandy at the moment! (I mean, who hasn't, have you seen the man????)
