I made my way out of the bathroom and instantly felt like I crashed into a brick wall. The last thought that ran through my head was that I was going to look like a complete idiot landing flat on my ass before a pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist, and I was pulled against a very hard chest.

“Whoa, if you wanted me that badly you didn’t need to throw yourself at me, sweetheart. I’d be pretty willing.”

I looked up, meaning to tell off the arrogant asshole who thought I would actually throw myself at someone, but all words ceased to exist when I looked up into a pair of startling gray eyes. He pulled me closer when I failed to say anything and pushed me lightly against the wall so our bodies were flush with each others.

I caught the glint of a lip ring as he turned to stare down at me with an intense gaze that set my body on fire. He wasn’t the normal type of guy I went for. One arm was covered in an array of colorful tattoo’s and from what I could tell, he had multiple piercings. Who knew how many others there were under the tight gray V-neck and black shorts he had on? For some reason, I really wanted to find out.

“You don’t look familiar. What’s your name, sweetheart?”

“Della,” I managed to whisper out. Why in the hell was I so nervous around this guy? I had no reason to be, he was the one who should be worshipping at my feet. Right?

“Della.” My name rolled off of his tongue before he ran a thumb over my cheek and dropped his hand down to his side. “I like it. The name’s Justin and I think you and I were meant to be. Want to get out of here?”Whatever fog had been cluttering my mind, suddenly cleared, and I shook my head, pushing at his chest as I stood up taller, even though he still had to look down as he towered over me.

“Seriously? That was about the lamest pick up line I’ve ever heard. No thanks.” I turned to walk away, but he jumped in front of me and held up a finger. “Wait, that didn’t come out right. I don’t know what the fuck is wrong me, normally I’m a whole lot smoother at this.”

“So normally you pick up girls a lot easier? Good for you.” I crossed my arms over my chest and let out a loud sigh when he still didn’t move.

“C’mon, Della. Let me buy you a drink at least, I’m really not that bad of a guy. Give me a chance?” His eyebrows knitted together as he waited for my response, and I was just about to
ell him where he could stick that drink when I caught site of the table where Nash and Mariah were looking awfully cuddly. Apparently they had made up. It made my stomach coil just at the thought of having to sit there and watch the two of them together.

“Fine, follow me.” Surprisingly, he did and by the time we got back to the table with the drink he had promised me, Callie, Drew, and Zoey were also back, looking slightly uncomfortable by Mariah’s presence.

Callie’s eyes widened as Justin situated himself next to me and she kept looking back and forth between the two of us in utter confusion. I introduced Justin to everyone, and he stood up to shake everyone’s hand before sitting back down next to me and leaning in, brushing his lips against my ear. “Can you say awkward? Want to dance?”

I stood up right away, wanting to get away from the glare of Nash and Mariah’s icy smile. Sure, Justin seemed like an arrogant asshole, but tonight, he was my lifesaver. Justin led me to the center of the dance floor and I couldn’t help but notice all of the death glares I was getting from almost every single girl around me.

We were all ready just inches from each other, but he put his hands on my hips to pull me even closer against his hard, muscular body, moving the both of us to the music. I had never in my life danced with a guy like this. Chris had always just kind of stood there while I grinded against him and enjoyed the show. Justin on the other hand, moved every time I did.

I let out a gasp when he twirled my body around and pulled my back tightly against his chest. My body tingled everywhere at the sudden contact. At first, I was hesitant to be dancing with this guy I had just met, but his hands all over me gave me the confidence to move right along with him.

I slid my body up and down his to the music, and he played right along, pulling me even closer and grinding against me. I felt his hands lock onto both of my wrists, and he moved them to wrap around his neck as his hands explored the sides of my body through the clingy material of my dress. My body hummed at the warmness of his hands, and I moaned when his lips brushed against my neck. I actually moaned.

I abruptly pulled away and turned towards him, pushing into his chest. “What in the hell was that for? I did not give you permission to touch me like that.”

“Really?” he replied with a smirk, sucking that stupid lip ring into his mouth. “Because you really seemed to be enjoying it. And I was too,” he added.

I shook my head sharply, rolling my eyes before turning on my heel. “Whatever, just leave me the fuck alone. I really don’t need to be another notch on your bedpost.” I stormed off, returning to the table where now just Callie and Zoey sat, waiting expectantly. “Are you two ready to get out of here?”

“Absolutely,” they both replied simultaneously, looping their arms through mine and quickly ushering me towards the front door. “Let’s get the hell out of here.”

Kota's Review

Chaotic is the story of Adelaide (Della) McGregor, a twenty something brat who has loved on step daddy’s money, and a downward spiral of sex, parties and drinking since her life took a dramatic turn when she was 17.   There comes a point in every pretentious socialite mothers life when her daughters indiscretions get too much for her to bear, so Della gets shipped off to live with her paternal grandparents.  It is once Della gets to North Carolina that this story takes hold.

There truly was so much going on in this story, that Chaotic is such an apt title. This is my first CA Williams book and while it was a pleasant read, and I am curious to see how the story unfolds – I am not sure I was completely sold on this book.

Ms Williams spent time developing the characters in this story and you either loved, hated or didn’t feel much for them at all.  Della started out incredibly unlikeable, her attitude of expectation was offensive, and after learning her story – I found a little unbelievable.  Chris played an integral role in Della’s backstory, but really seemed like an odd inclusion in her current situation – I can only assume he may feature somewhere in book 2?  Then of course we have Marley and Madison – really, I thought I had fallen into a scene from Mean Girls with these three, thank goodness Della matured along the way.

The support characters for the bulk of the story are Callie and Zoey, these girls had some really redeeming qualities and were good secondary characters for the storyline given the little we really know about them.  Then of course there are the men in Della’s life.  Nash – the best friend since forever and Justin the hot man whore bad boy in town.

Della’s journey has her crossing paths with both men, but you will have to read to see how that all plays out.  Both men were likeable characters, clearly with flaws but care about Della.

On the most part Ms William’s writing style and tone is pleasing to read, with engaging characters and complex storylines she is able to draw the reader in.  Unfortunately, however, there were things about this story that I didn’t connect with.

The relationship between Della and Nash was lacking the connection that was implied, I am unsure if that was because emotion was lacking from the scenes when together, or whether there was too much assumption expected of the reader – given the timeframes, the relationship just seemed odd to me.  Additionally, similarly with Justin and Della – how did that happen, and when did it all change?  I also struggled a little with the unprotected sex storylines – while I very serious issue and one that needs to be discussed – do people not learn from others ‘mistakes’?  c’mon people if it’s not on its not on……  I guess it seemed to be an overused issue for me.

While I am pleased with the character growth throughout, and the premise of the storyline, I think there were some significant gaps in its delivery, with outcomes of convenience, and plots not adequately being resolved.  I have to mention there were significant editorial and grammatical errors throughout – I hope that these were only in the ARC version and have been picked up before publishing, as they became distracting to me as the reader.

On reflection, I sound critical but this story was a good book – it will get 3 ½ hearts on our ratings scale and for a new adult story it is a pleasant read.

Hardpressed by Meredith Wild with Giveaway

Title: Hardpressed (Hacker#2)

Author: Meredith Wild

Genre: Erotic Romance 18+
Publication Date: December 9, 2013
Event organized by: Literati Author Services, Inc.

Synopsis

In Hardpressed, the highly anticipated second book of the Hacker Series that began with Hardwired, Blake and Erica face threats that put both their love and their lives on the line. Despite Blake Landon’s controlling ways, the young and wealthy hacker finally won the trust of the woman he loves. Internet entrepreneur Erica Hathaway broke down the walls that kept her from opening her heart and her business to Blake. Ready to start this new chapter in her life, Erica is determined not to let anything come between them, even if that means giving Blake back some of the control he craves in and out of the bedroom. But when demons from her past threaten their future, Erica makes a decision that could change their lives forever.

Kota's Review

I reviewed Hardwired (Hackers #1) and that review can be read by clicking here – I gave it 4 hearts.

Many of the elements that were enjoyable from that book remained in this one. I do enjoy Meredith Wild’s writing style, her mix of steamy and suspense are well balanced.

In Hardpressed, Erica and Blake continue from the end of Hardwired.  Erica continued to maintain a strength of character to stand up to Blake when it comes to her business, while being totally incapable of saying no to him in the bedroom.

This story and has many twists and takes us on a journey of heartbreak, blackmail, deceit, survival and at the end a sense of integrity.

I found the plotlines intense and on the most part believeable.  This story also explores the BDSM element a little more with Blake needing Erica’s submission, and Erica understanding Blake’s desires.

There are new characters that have been introduced, some play integral roles in the story, others almost seem to be convenient for story tangents.  The series does not end with this book, as we find out Blake and Erica’s story continues.  There is however no real cliffhanger – for those of you who dislike them, don’t be deterred.

I was disappointed with the resolution of a significant plot line.  It makes me think that in fact it is incomplete, because the outcome was just not believeable for me.  While I am ok if the storyline carries over – however, in this book the build was very detailed and intense and then the climax was just…  pfffft.

Rest assured Ms Wild’s tone and writing style are thoroughly engaging, and this series has the makings of a good series.  I am rating this 4 hearts on par with Book 1 – only because in my perfect world Hardpressed is closer to a really good read, than just a good read!

Synopsis:

I'll be honest with you—I'm no hero. Sure—the media tries to brand every Navy SEAL as some kind of Batman dressed in cammies. There’s even a line in one of our cadences—"superman is the man of steel, he ain’t no match for Navy SEAL." You've seen the movies—we're indestructible, invincible, invulnerable. But that night, the one you read about in the papers—all I really wanted to do was get laid.

One harmless fuck with a Curaçao whore—no strings attached. I picked her out of a lineup—wild, dark hair, long legs and a crooked smile. After she sucked me off, I relaxed back onto the creaky, cum-stained cot, thankful for the blissful moments she gave me when I actually forgot for a second the faces of my buddies who died because I made the wrong call, the tears of the children I couldn't save, and the eyes of the enemies I slaughtered during their last seconds of life.

But before I left, her green eyes peered into my soul. She whispered in a distinct So Cal accent, "My name is Annie Baylis. I'm an American citizen. I was kidnapped from a cruise ship five years ago. You're my last hope. Please save me."

One desperate plea. This wasn’t a Hollywood blockbuster or a New York Times best-selling thriller. I knew that this time there was no room for excuses, no margin for errors. I had one chance to put the cape on and be her hero.

Synopsis

My life was perfectly mapped out for me since before the day I was born. I followed it, begrudgingly, because it’s what was expected. And then one day, everything changed. I woke up. Different. Independent. Free from all the rules that had surrounded me. Only I have no idea how I got to where I am. I have no memory of graduating college. No memory of Adam, the boyfriend I live with. He loves me. And I love him. At least that’s what everyone says. Except when my memories return to me as dreams, I see a different man than the one everyone claims is perfect for me. He terrifies me. He makes my heart race and he makes me feel things I’ve never felt before. I have no idea if I want to welcome the emotional roller-coaster that his piercing brown eyes and messy black hair puts me on every time I get a glimpse of him, or if I want to run back to the safe shelter of the scripted life-plan that used to be mine.

RU teaser 2

Excerpt

“So who was the girl?”
I stare at the ceiling, ignoring my therapist’s question. I hate this room. The walls are yellow but not a happy yellow. More like what I imagine baby poop looks like. And the chairs haven’t been updated since at least the sixties. By the time my sessions are done, the only thing that’s changed is the imprint of the scratchy fabric on the backs of my thighs.
Instead of answering the question, I count the ceiling tiles and multiply the rows. Ironic that I use math at a time like this when it was a math class that got me into all this trouble in the first place.
Reliving all these dreams every week is almost as exhausting as having them in the first place. Talking about them doesn’t make anything better.
“Adam?” Dr. Jamison has lost interest in my silence, again, and turns to him. She’s about fifty years old and her faded blonde hair that hangs down to her waist is always braided. She wears flowy, multi-colored hippy skirts and mismatched tops every time I see her. Sometimes I want to ask her if she has a joint, just to see what she says.
“Tina,” he says softly. I stare out the window at the playground that sits empty at the park across the street. “It was just Tina.”
“Who’s Tina?”
“She was a friend from home. We grew up next door to each other. She was in town that weekend visiting friends from our high school that went to college with me. That’s all.”
That’s all. It’s only two words, but they sound so condescending every time I hear them. It tells me that everything I’m either dreaming or remembering is made up or a half-truth of what the real life events actually were. It tells me that I’m being an idiot for believing them over my boyfriend who loves me. Or so I’ve been told.
Maybe I’d believe them if I remembered Adam at all.

Kota's Review

Remembering Us is the story of Amy, a young lady who fought against what was expected of her, to fulfil her own plan with her boyfriend by her side.  However, after an accident, she has lost the last two years of her memory.

Given this not only is she struggling with her physical recovery, but her emotional journey is shrouded with uncertainty and doubt.  Will she find her way back, and will it be back to the way it was before?

I have not read Stacey Lynn’s work before, and I must say that she writes in a tone and style that is very engaging for the reader.  You are along for the journey, and the emotion is felt from the pages.

On the most part, the characters are well developed and the struggles they face are genuine, as are their fears.  This story is narrated by Amy and therefore, given the gaps in her memory there are gaps in some of the characters back stories, I think I would have been more drawn to those characters is there was narration from other parties, but I understand why this was not the case.

Given this story was one of memory loss, and memory recollection, the reflection on events, and the lack of consistent timeframes worked well, I think Ms Lynn made this story flow as best as it possibly could given the character situation and the plot.

Remembering Us has no cliffhanger, and is a sweet novel that takes us on an endearing journey of love, trust, compassion, and patience.

On our rating scale 3 ½ = Good and 4 = Really Good.  This sit in between both for me, in an ideal world I would rate this a 3.75…  but that’s not how this works – so I will bump Remembering Us up to a 4.  If you enjoy a story where love triumphs, then you should enjoy this tale.

Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer by Demelza Carlton

Nightmares Trilogy

Dark, disturbing and definitely scary - Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer is the first book in Demelza Carlton's Nightmares Trilogy. The second book is Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller.

Synopsis

There are real monsters out there. The worst part is that they're human.

They took her away from me.
I mumbled a protest through the haze of pain and exhaustion that had turned me into little more than a zombie. I'll never be able to watch a zombie movie again without remembering this night, I thought.
"It's all right - we have to move her to take care of her. She's hurt worse than you," I was told. "We need to treat you, too. There's a gunshot wound in your shoulder."
One of the hospital staff looked grim and came over. She started firing questions at me.
"Name?"
"Nathan Miller."
"What happened?"
"I was shot."
"By whom?"
"A homicidal lunatic with a gun and bad aim."
"Her name?"
"Caitlin Lockyer."
"What happened to her?"
"Looks like someone tried to kill her."

Nathan found Caitlin on a beach covered in blood. Saving her life was just the start. Now he's the prime suspect and he has to find out who's really responsible. Both of their lives depend on it.

Who hurt her?
Why was he shot?
What did he promise?
Why doesn't his story add up?
Who was the dead man on the beach?
What will she remember when she wakes up?

Excerpt

"Stay away from her, Nathan. That girl isn't good for you."
Stay away from her? I'd go crazy with worry in a day. "You don't know her."
Chris looked grim. "Neither do you. Is there anything you wouldn't do for her?"
"Yes," I snapped. "I wouldn't die for her."
Chris turned around to stare at me, her mouth hanging open.
"Do you want to know why?" I asked steadily. "I wouldn't die for her because I wouldn't be able to protect her any more. What if I missed one of the people who hurt her? I couldn't take that risk. She's too important."

Kota's Review

Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer is the first in the Nightmares Series.  It is the story of Caitlin, who has been kidnapped, traumatized and left for dead, as she strives for survival.

Nathan, who saves Caitlin from what appears to be certain death, becomes extremely attached to her, for a number of reasons.

This story takes us along the path of Nathan finding Caitlin, and being the prime suspect, Caitlin being so traumatised that she initially only communicates through her nightmares, but is clear enough for those around her to know that she needs Nathan.  Nathan does not leave Caitlin’s side for extended periods while they try and piece together what happened to her.

This story is full of drama, and violence, it ends on a note of strength and shows the strength of Caitlin’s character to survive.

So in thinking about my review for this story I found it difficult.  I liken this story to a contemporary dance routine – it is eclectic and relies on the choreographer’s interpretation in order to make sense to the audience.  However, once the audience understands it – it can be powerful and compelling.

The plot behind this story is compelling, elements of the story telling were powerful and gripping, but unfortunately this story left me scratching my head asking what the? Rather than being left in awe of the story.
There are so many elements of the story that I struggled with.  This left me with a million questions that by the end of the book still feel unanswered, and stopped me from being entrenched in the story and truly engaged.

Areas of concern for me relate to: the story regarding Nathan’s employment; The nature of Nathan’s feelings for Caitlin and his manner in internally expressing them from the start – come on really, she was 17; Caitlin’s backstory, why was she taken?  How is it possible that her family did not show?  The friends – how did they make the shortlist? Who are they? Caitlin vs Laura; and Caitlin’s insight at the end – how did she reach it? To mention a few.

This is the first work of Demelza Carlton’s I have read, and I will read book 2 in this series in the hope that some of these unanswered questions are resolved for me.  I feel that Ms Carlton has a gift with the written word, she does not write in a conventional style, but has the capacity to be very engaging if there was a little more depth to backstory and character development.

I am rating Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer 3 ½ hearts which makes it a good story on our rating scale.

3 & 1/2 hearts for Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.
She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.
Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all.
Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.
The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy.

Pieces For You is a captivating journey of survival, healing, and sacrifice—teeming with honesty, humor, unexpected twists, and love’s unsurpassed endurance. *Though Pieces For You is a part of the For You Series, the book can be read as a stand alone.

Kota's Review

As the synopsis tells, Pieces for You is Sam’s story of recovery, survival, healing and love.  What a freaking journey it is.

Pieces for you can be read as a standalone novel – however, if you can read Only for you first, it allows you to truly understand the dynamics of the relationships, the trauma and the recovery that Sam partakes in.

Having met Ev & Hunter in Only for You, with Sam and Griffin as secondary characters – it wasn’t long before Sam became a personality to be reckoned with, and integral to Ev’s journey.  In Pieces for You, the roles are reversed while we see Sam’s personality locked away until she commences to heal.

Sam in true form is a riot, and her and Ev together make for some seriously laugh out loud moments.  Sam as a survivor is inspirational, her strength and determination evoke such compassionate emotion that you cannot help but want her journey to be smoothe.  Unfortunately, it is anything but.

Griffin, oh Griffin – such a stand up, decent guy in Only for You full of surprising talent becomes a hot sexy alpha in Pieces for you.  His pledge to protect Sam is tested, and boy does he deliver….  Some would say he delivers sweet justice…  Hell – he made it happen!

Genna Rulon for a new author weaves an amazing story with these characters – her plot is full of twists and turns with heartache by the bucket loads – in this series, the storyline is grave and one of the worst fears of any young lady and parent of children living away from home.  The fact that Ms Rulon can portray these serious subjects with integrity and yet intersperse it with humour to ease the tension and severity makes this story a thoroughly enjoyable read.  Lets not even touch on THAT plot twist that make you want to castrate some dude…  (there are a few guys that deserve it, but I am talking about THAT guy…)

The characters are well developed and the storylines sound as they progress.  It is clear to me that Ms Rulon’s tone and writing style complement her creative ideas.  It has been a pleasure to read Ms Rulon’s early works – I suspect her future works will continue to get better.

If I had any issue of complaint, it would be the lack of false starts of a physical nature between Griff and Sam.  I understand that creative license would be taken to keep the storyline going, but I think this issue maybe deserved to be fleshed out a little more.  The other slight issue for me – and for those that read my reviews know it’s a pet peeve – are the typos.. few and far between, but evident enough to catch my eye, especially if they impact on a sentence, ie: was instead of wasn’t really can change the tone/impact of a situation.

It is because of these relatively minor issues that I am going with a 4 ½ heart rating.  Congrats on another great story – Let’s hope Meg gets her turn next, clearly there is a story to tell there!

Being part of an Otherworld race has its drawbacks, however, when Emma and Evin are enrolled for training at Hawthorne after a heated meeting with the Otherworld Council and its leaders. It's either sink or swim for these Otherworldly twins as they train at the academy and learn to control their unique gifts. Convinced life couldn't get much more bizarre, Emma and Evin discover a mysterious archway leading to an entirely different realm that has been lost over time. It's in this Lost Realm and the Celestial kingdom of Evmurah that the twins are dubbed the Guardians of the Realms, protectors of both the Mortal and Immortal Realms. It's Emma and Evin's job to protect both realms from the darkness that taints them and the mysterious Precursor that seems to want them dead.

Synopsis

It's been one month since Emma and Evin Lefay's encounter with the vengeful Caine Fletcher, and just as they are beginning to hope things can return to normal--or as normal as the Otherworlders' lives can be--the twins are attacked one night in a graveyard by mysterious, mask-wearing Stiffs... The twins learn the masked Stiffs are known as Venators, and are part of a secret society, whose sole purpose is to extinguish all Otherworld beings. If that's not enough, strange things are beginning to happen to Emma and Evin. Emma begins having preminitions, and Evin discovers he has the sudden, phenomenal ability to supernaturally heal his own wounds. Meanwhile, Tristan's sister is in town, and she's causing more trouble than good--mainly in Evin's love life. With two very different girls vying for his attention and only one girl worth chasing after, how can the Guardian possibly be expected to concentrate on much of anything else? As if they aren't already overwhelmed enough, the leader of the Boston Otherworld Mafia has taken a sudden interest in the Guardians. "Marco Polo," as he is called, promises to help Emma and Evin with the Venators--for an unlisted price. Things are quickly spinning out of control for Emma and Evin... Will they conquer the threats that face them? Or have the Guardians of the Realms finally met their match?

About the Author

Headshot- K.L. Penington
K.L. Penington was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, which is what initially inspired the background for characters Emma and Evin. It was at an early age that K.L. discovered she was not whatsoever athletically gifted, an evil genius, or the next Beethoven. One thing she did know, however, was that she loved to read. As a result, growing up, some of her best friends and biggest influences in her life were the characters from her favorite books. The passion behind K.L.’s writing comes from the ability to be anyone and do anything, and because she can share the multiple different personalities living in her head without anyone judging her—much. Her dream has always been to one day see her own books on bookshelves, next to the hundreds of other books she enjoys reading. Currently residing in Wichita Falls, Texas, K.L. attends Midwestern State University, where she is in fierce pursuit of an English degree. When not writing, K.L. can be found haunting the local coffee shop, nurturing an everlasting addiction to chai tea, or spoiling her only child, Lily, the small poodle with the big attitude.
