Kota's Review

Dragon’s don’t cry is the first in a new paranormal series by D’Elen McClain.  And yes, it is fundamentally about Dragons.

In this story we learn about other realms, curses, bride claimings and of course Dragons.  We meet Acasia who is a young woman that is claimed by Bastian, the Dragon.

We follow their relationship as Acasia settles into her new life as bride in Bastian’s realm.  We also meet other characters, that clearly will become lead’s in future instalments in this series.

Can Acasia and Bastian find a sense of peace and co-exist together?  Will love happen for these two?  You will need to read this one to find that out.

So here are my thoughts on Dragon’s Don’t Cry, first I am going to say – I love D’Elen.  I think she is a wonderful person who writes from her heart, and is full of complex worlds and ideals that need to be shared.  Unfortunately, this world didn’t quite grab me!

I have previously reviewed D’Elen’s Fang Chronicles, and I find myself wondering if this series will give me the same experience.  With the Fang Chronicles, I found that the world which D’Elen had created was so complex and intricate that each book needed much more depth to allow me to truly transcend into these stories.  However, I found that as I read each instalment, with the knowledge that I took from each preceding story – the enjoyment of the books grew.  I get a similar sense with Dragon’s Don’t Cry.

I am content, somewhat, with the explanation of the curse.  I also get the claiming.  What I struggle with are the realms and the language.  Without giving any story plots away, there are a number of occasions where I was confused about the links between realms, characters and the intent.

The storyline is good – the plot base was there, the language for me was stilted, and this was because the era was not truly clear for me.  The humour that is talked about in the synopsis was missing and I was just left with a sense of …  how long will I have to wait for the next instalments so I can put all of these pieces together and grasp the intensity of the world of fantasy and strong characters that D’Elen has created?

I am sitting on the fence with this one – and rating it a solid 3.  It wasn’t a bad read, but not one that has me screaming from the roof tops.  I know D’Elen and I know she can and will deliver… and by the end of this series I will probably be hooked…  well fingers crossed anyway!

About the Author

I’m a writer, author, word warrior! I owned an independent bookstore for many years in my 20’s and 30’s. So it should be obvious, I LOVE BOOKS. Fiction or non-fiction it doesn’t matter. I hated self-help but then found Og Mandino. I hated French history and the game of chess and then discovered The Eight by Katherine Neville. I’ve stopped limiting myself to what I think I like.

That brings me to paranormal fiction. It’s a passion of mine. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, angels and demons, I read them all. I’ve wanted to write a vampire/werewolf novel for a long time. Taking a break from another series (aka Suzie Ivy The Bad Luck Detective), I decided to write the story screaming inside my head. The Fang Chronicles Book I almost wrote itself. No research or trying to remember a specific conversation, all I needed to do was keep the names straight.
