Synopsis
Jada McLean is about to get married in nine days, when she walks in on her fiancé in a little more than a compromising position. Days later, she’s on a trip that she intends to be relaxing and a prelude to her fresh start, when she runs into the rude, obnoxious, but gorgeous Jonathan Kole.
Jonathan Kole is San Francisco’s newest District Attorney. When he finds himself deeply attracted to a stunning beauty, he has no idea that she’s about to get into BIG trouble with the law—and he’ll be the one presiding over her trial. To make matters worse, his father is the lawyer representing her in the high-profile case.
When a series of events force them together over New Year’s weekend, Jonathan’s feelings and ethics will come into question, while Jada comes to terms with the fact that she is falling for the man that will be responsible for attempting to put her behind bars… Little do they know, they're both about to fall into a whirlwind so deep, it will send both their lives spiraling out of control.
Kota's Review
This is my first time reading Rebecca Rohman’s work. Love Lies and the DA is a complex story that takes many turns on the way to is resolution. This book is lengthy at over 500 pages, so you definitely get lots of story.
In Love Lies and the DA we meet Jada, who’s world turns upside down when just before her wedding she walks in on her fiancé and her best friend doing the nasty – needless to say… the wedding doesn’t quite proceed! Jada is a successful business woman who applies a no nonsense approach to dealing with this situation, and decides after all is said and done to get a way for a while to process everything. Its at this point that her life takes turn after turn.
Jonathon Kole is the DA – he is an arrogant arse when they first cross paths, but he is driven and determined. Things happen which lead Jonathon and Jada continue to cross paths. It is only a matter of time before feelings start to develop.
The journey these two go on is long and dangerous. Death and despair feature, as does love and hope.
Now my thoughts on this story.. The storyline and plot are great, the way things unravel has you intrigued. This could have had the potential to be a great read. Unfortunately for me, it wasn’t.
I received this book as an advanced readers copy, and I understand reviews should not focus on typos but on the story – unfortunately the story got lost for me a little because of the typos and the formatting. Hopefully, the published version had these corrected so the same didn’t happen to you as readers.
This story was told from dual perspectives. This was far from seamless for me, with transitions occurring sentence after sentence. The amount of time I had to stop and re-read to confirm whose perspective I was reading because all of a sudden the story stopped making sense, and the typos were many.
I believe Ms Rohman has the ability to tell a great story, as I indicated earlier – the storyline and plot were great, the delivery left me wanting though. The language was extremely formal between Jada and Jonathon, which made their chemistry and sexual tension unbelievable, there was a number of repetitions of information, I think this may have been due to the length of the book, and that it had slipped the authors mind that this info had already been shared. While not earth shattering, it seemed to devalue my investment in the story.
There was extensive use of unnecessary or over used details which extended the book without substance. This story could have been told with more brevity, which may have increased the tension of the story. Please don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate this story – for the length of the story and the structural issues I had with it – the pages kept turning. The climax of the story was engaging and left you wanting to know what next. I feel this story would be more successful with some significant editing, and maybe some constructive beta feedback on the language use.
I am rating Love Lies & the DA 3 hearts, which is an acceptable read on our scale. The story is engaging beyond the structural issues I had, but got lost in the editorial delivery of my copy.
