Resisting Her by Kendall Ryan (Audio Book Review)

Synopsis

Agent Cole Fletcher lives for his job at the FBI, and he’s more than ready for his next assignment—raiding a cult compound and putting their leader behind bars. But he isn’t prepared for Savannah and her knock you on your ass good looks. At nineteen, she’s too old for foster care and too damaged to live on her own. With nowhere else to go, and against his better judgment Cole takes her in.

But helping her out won’t be easy. He comforts her through screaming nightmares and escaping the lingering fears of her past, but that’s the easy part. Her preference to sleep cuddled up next to his warm body, and her desire to please him in every way makes her harder and harder to resist.

Iva's Review

A few weeks ago I entered a competition to win Resisting Her by Kendall Ryan on audiobook. I love audiobooks because it means I can get a few things done around the house or drive somewhere without having to stop "reading".

Resisting her by Kendall Ryan is told predominantly from Colby Fletcher's point of view. Colby is a 27 year old FBI agent who rescues Savannah from a cult her mother joined 12 years earlier when Savannah was just 7 years of age. Savannah was taught from an early age that the cult protected her from the base desires of men who only wanted a woman for sex. Not having anyone else to turn to after her mother dies, Savannah stayed on at the compound but began to question these beliefs and seek some freedom by demanding an education. After the compound is raided by the FBI, Savannah is forced to live alone in a seedy halfway house on her own. Colby, or Col as Savannah comes to know him, is unable to forget the vulnerability of the woman he carried out of the compound and seeks her out to reassure himself that she is okay. When it is obvious that she is not, and that she has no one else to turn to, Col does the one thing he can think of and takes her back to his apartment. But is it solely for her protection? Or is there some truth to the cult leaders teachings?

Colby is an alpha male in that he protects those he perceives as weak or emotionally damaged. He has a torn up past himself and this sometimes distorts his ability to judge how much "protection" a person needs. With Savannah, he overestimates how affected she was by the cult, and isn't able to move past his first impressions of her. Colby finds himself balancing on the fine edge of wanting to shield Savannah and wanting to make her his. I think the author has done a fine job of making him a very likeable character with tangible emotions and a personality strong but flawed.

Savannah is also a character a reader can enjoy. Her upbringing has been non traditional but she has managed to come through it level headed and curious about the outside world rather than scared. The author has done a fantastic job of allowing Savannah to emotionally evolve as a character during this book. It gives her an authenticity that makes her more likeable as a character despite the story being told mainly from Col's perspective. It is very cleverly done through Savannahs actions and dialogue as Col himself is blind to the growth Savannah undertakes whilst she lives with him.

Minor characters enhance the flow of the book and add another dimension to the main characters lives. Col's sister Marissa is the typical older sister in this book, but she adds insight into Col's past and her empathy for Savannah gives the story the extra feminine touch it needs to help Savannah be more comfortable as character to the female reader.

The story is enjoyable and well told, if perhaps a little lack lustre. A lot of it takes part in the apartment as the two deal with their hang ups and work out their feelings for each other. I felt more could have been done with the "thriller" part of the story which had a good build up but in it's conclusion made the characters appear to over react. Sex scenes are enjoyable as is the growing relationship between the two.

Resisting Her the story gets 4 hearts

The narration on the audiobook is performed by Josh Goodman. OMG! If you don't fantasize about his sexy gravelly voice whispering dirty words in your ear then you are not female! He does a stellar job of bringing Col to life and telling Kendall Ryan's story. There is a variance in the voices he uses, and the pace of his telling matches that of the story. Diction is very clear so you won't be wondering what was just said at anytime along the way. Please note though, listening to this book in public may cause some embarrassment.

Everytime Josh Goodman utters the word "F#@k" or "C#@k" you will want to moan and maybe rip your knickers off and twirl them above your head and yell yeeha!

Josh Goodman and his narration get 4 & 1/2 Hearts
