Synopsis

Sixteen years is a long time to wait for your true love to reappear, and, anyway, Nicki Johnson couldn’t wait for the impossible to happen. Hard life lessons have taught her that fairy tales are children’s stories, and fate is cruel. Burying her hopes, she’s spent the last sixteen years focused and driven toward her career, and it’s landed her with a job at the White House with a gem of a boyfriend. But when her high school love, Adam Kincaid, walks into the White House as a BBC reporter, Nicki’s world is thrown into turmoil as she relives their past. Adam has come back for her, but has he arrived too late?

Kota's Review

As the Blurb indicates, Adam and Nicki cross paths in a professional capacity some 16 years after their last meeting.  Both are currently in relationships, but it is clear their chemistry still runs fully charged.
Nicki is the press secretary for the newly incumbent President, so naturally being the White House press secretary is a demanding job.  Adam works for the BBC, and basically finds his way into the position of BBC’s White House correspondent.  Obviously there is a particular conflict of interest with their jobs and their past, so Nicki tries everything to keep a professional distance.
And Adam tries everything to make up for the last time they were together!
Without giving anything away, it is safe to say their path back to each other is fraught.
Mary Whitney maintains the same level of consistency in this story as she did in the first one, her tone and style are pleasant to read.  This story is enjoyable, and there are many facets that keep you drawn in with the characters.
There is a significant amount of this story that cites segments of book 1 – however, instead of Nicki or Adam reflecting upon those experiences, they are verbatim segments, which unfortunately makes it seem like a cut and paste, rather than a narrative of a time past.  This spoiled this story a little bit for me….
However, that is a reasonably minor issue – the story is again a sweet read, the chemistry is there, the secondary characters are entertaining the outcome, while predictable, was a nice end.

Unfortunately though, as with book 1 – I liked it, but I didn’t feel it –
so another 3 ½ hearts.

Review of Beside Your Heart (Book 1)

Blurb

"It's an emotional story that will take the reader back to those feelings that made the late teen years such a powerful time."

Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.

Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

Kota's Review

We begin this story being introduced to Nicki in 1998, she is googling the name of her ex boyfriend, you know that one that you have when you are 16 and he makes your heart go boom!  In Nicki’s case,   he is Adam Kinncaid….

We then flash back 6 years to high school.  This story is primarily Nicki’s and it follows the trials and tribulations of her relationship with Adam, who is spending a year in a America due to his fathers work.
This story is about love and loss, surviving through grief and depression, and making the most of the situations you are presented with.  The love between Adam and Nicki is such intense young love that is burdened by reality and eventually distance.

I enjoyed Nicki and Adam’s story.  I felt for Nicki and her experiences and I thought the author did an amazing job portraying the relationship dynamics, particularly between Nicki and her parents.  Adam’s compassion for Nicki as well as his obvious attraction made their relationship grow in intensity very quickly.  Can they overcome the obstacles that seem determined to get in their way?

I enjoyed the tone and style of this story – it was well written and is a sweet tale.  I did struggle a little bit with the timeline.  The prologue starts in 1998, the story takes place in 1992 and the epilogue sees us in 2009.  Because of this, it seemed somewhat disjointed and almost like the story could have been told in one book, but a second book was born, and the first story became almost abruptly ended.  Now don’t get me wrong, the story as it stands is complete, it was just a sense I had while reading!

I am going to rate Beside your heart with 3 ½ hearts.  It was a nice sweet read, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t ‘feel’ it.

3 1/2 hearts!
