Synopsis:
I am weak.
I am lonely.
I am a slut.
I am strong.
I am Dominant.
I am independent.
I am Seven James.
My entire life, no one has wanted me, and that was fine, because I sure as shit didn't need anyone else. Blah, Blah Blah, insert sad story here about negligent parents, and shitty siblings, and you have my life story in a nut shell. When my college boyfriend dumped me, it was just icing on the cake. Five years, and a booming career later I am here to collect my revenge.
That was until a delicious plaything walked into the kink club I frequent, and rocked my typically un-rockable world. Causing me to break the one rule I have lived by since Daniel Alexander walked out of my life, never have sex with the same person twice. Ever.
Warning!!!! Hers contains sexually explicit situations that may be uncomfortable for some. These include FF, FMF, and MFM interactions
Kota's Review
This is a challenging book to review. I mean I enjoyed it, but I was also confounded by it.
So Hers is the story of Seven James. Seven has one plan and one plan only – that is world domination! Or at least revenge, while on her path to world domination!
Seven is a corporate bulldog, in an industry where she gets to have men for breakfast. But Seven is also not all that she seems. She is a broken girl who has some serious self-esteem issues. She is also sexually adventurous and dominant, being a regular it Swingers and Sinners, which is obviously a sex club.
Daniel Alexander is the one man Seven let get close to her, and is one man who broke her heart. He is the target of her revenge.
Levi is some new meat, who catches Seven’s eye and some seriously sexual encounters follow. But Levi soon becomes hooked, and things with Seven become extremely complicated.
This story is about how one broken woman learns to trust again in order to overcome the issues that have plagued her life. There are also a number of supporting characters in this story, most notably Star, Seven’s best friend.
This story takes you on a journey that comes with a number of interconnected relationships and some twists along the way. The story is compelling, with the lead being a strong corporate woman. However, the elements that confounded me kept me from truly loving this story.
For me, Seven’s back story did not portray enough for me to buy her being as ‘fucked up’ as she repeatedly claimed. Also the relationship between Levi and Seven, while a great dynamic, and one you ultimately were cheering for, was borne of instalust/love from Levi with little basis except sex. This had me questioning this along the way… if there was more believability I think I would have been cheering from the start!
Star – wow – she is a shit friend! I get her back story, and the lead in of her story for book two, but based on her portrayal in Hers – I didn’t believe her backstory and as such felt little empathy for her.
The corporate side of the story was great… who doesn’t love a woman who eats men for breakfast in the boardroom! I would have liked more elements of this strong character trait of Seven’s to come to the fore.
And lastly – the ending, it was a nice little package all tied up in a bow… for someone so broken, she was pretty easily fixed! I know that sounds cynical, but I think because it was not a lengthy book, the speed at which we reached the ending really did not do justice to the expected complexities of the characters and their relationships.
Unfortunately I can't really expand on that without spoilers! (oh and I read this as an ARC and hope these were picked up prior to publishing, but there are a number of errors throughout that were irritating…but I managed to go with the flow!)
Hers is an erotic tale. The sex is… well... it's explicit, erotic and it works… did it get my rocks off? Eh... nope, BOB didn’t come out to play…. But Dawn does do a decent scene with Seven and her bed fellows…
Overall, if you want a quick read that has a good basis for the story, some decent sex and no cliff hanger, I would recommend Hers. I will definitely be seeing where Dawn takes the next story, because I think she has the basics down, just needs to enhance them to make it great!
I am giving Hers 3 ½ Hearts! |
