Synopsis

Demons.

They’re everywhere, hiding in plain sight. Chances are, you’ve interacted with one or two of them in your lifetime without even realizing it...

Demon hunter Evelyn Brighton saves unsuspecting humans from the malevolent creatures masquerading around them every day. Working under the Lebriga Corporation’s direction, she never fails to bring her A-game with her keen skill, fiercely independent spirit, and the best weapon in her arsenal: the Divinity blade.

Evelyn’s world is turned on its ear, however, when she is ordered to train cocky new recruit Daniel Summers. They both feel an instinctive pull drawing them to one another, the ancient spells tattooed into their skin illuminating whenever the two hunters come into contact. But with evil looming over the city of Los Angeles, Evelyn and Daniel’s mutual competitiveness and sense of duty to Lebriga and all humankind forces them to hold back their desires. Will their restraint be enough to keep them focused and save southern California, or will the dark forces prevail?

Set in modern-day Los Angeles, Divinity is an action-filled, fast-paced marriage of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Edgy, witty, and sexy, it will bind you in its spell.

Iva's Review

Divinity by Patricia Leever is a paranormal romance novel featuring demons and magic.

Evelyn Brighton is a demon hunter working for the Lebriga Corporation. She has seen the devastation brought about by the death of a lover and has therefore kept everyone at arms length, including her best friend and handler, Tess. So it shouldn't be too much of a problem for her to keep new hunter, Daniel Summers, with his cocky lopsided grin and bad ass attitude from getting under her skin. If only her eye of serendipity tattoo, the one that recognises fated destiny, wouldn't glow whenever he was near.

I started this book eagerly, after all paranormal romance is something I enjoy and while this book is good and at times had me wanting to keep reading, I found I was a little disappointed by the end.

This book is written in both Evelyn and Daniels first person perspectives, with each chapter changing the narrator. This was easily followed as the characters were often in contact and would be addressing or thinking of the other within a sentence or two.

Evelyn is a reknowned hunter in the Lebriga Corporation who specialises in magic and tattoos, but can also wield a mean sword. Evelyn apparently looks like a 23 year old, but in actuality is 135 years old. Her dialogue was quite young and modern and I found that this was detrimental to her back story. I did like her as a character. Evelyn is like a soft centred chocolate, hard on the outside with a centre that you know is going to be a little gooey. Patricia Leever has depicted her well with only a few slight inconsistencies.

Daniel Summers is a little insubstantial as a character. He is alluded to being a cocky bad ass but he is so caught up with Evelyn and she is so focused on his inexperience as a hunter that he kind of comes across as a 13 year old boy. That is until he gets a little confidence in Evelyn's attraction to him and Whoa! Enter sexy Daniel..... for all of a couple of paragraphs and then he's gone again and a less cocky but still "youngish feeling" Daniel is back in place.

Minor characters are involved in the story as a backdrop to the main couple. They feel more like props to keep the story going rather than people. Hunters and handlers are also introduced and detailed at the beginning of the book in such a way that it was almost like a roll call and affected the flow of the story for me.

Fight scenes with demons were a little ho hum. I never got the feeling that the characters were surprised or overwhelmed. This was, perhaps, the biggest let down in the story.

Overall Divinity by Patricia Leever is a commendable paranormal romance and well worth a read due to the story concept.

Iva rates it 3 and a half heartsRead it if you like Lilith Saintcrow's Jill Kissmet series.
