In Too Deep by Eliza Jane

Blurb

When gifted computer hacker Taylor Beckett wins a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school, she figures it’s only a matter of time before they discover she hacked into the testing system and cheated on the test. But when she arrives at the academy, they already know and her hacking talents are what won her the scholarship.

When she’s paired with the school’s scrumptious nineteen-year-old martial arts instructor, aka manwhore, Colt on a field assignment, hanging out with him becomes a necessary evil to get the job done, but resisting the bad-boy that is so off limits might be more than she can manage. He's one of those guys you just know isn't good for you –he can–and often does–have any girl he wants.

The deeper she gets involved in a troubling field assignment, the more she finds herself relying on Colt. If she can just figure out how to do the right thing and not fall for irritatingly hot Colt in the process, life can go back to normal. Baby steps.

IN TOO DEEP is a mature young adult contemporary romance told in dual point of view. It is book one in a series. Book two, TEMPTED is due fall of 2013.

Review

This is Book 1 in the In too deep series of YA Books.  I have not read Eliza Janes work before, so I was new to her tone and style.  I found the writing engaging and the story enjoyable, and I look forward to the next installment.

This story follows Taylor as she starts on a ‘scholarship’ and Wilbrook Academy.  Taylor is happy to start over after her boyfriend broke her heart.

She meets MJ and Logan who soon become her friends, she also meets Colt, her martial arts instructor, and Wilbrook hot guy (aka man whore).  Because Taylor has trust issues, and some minor self esteem issues – she wants to steer clear of all thing Colt.   Yeah… Right!!!

Anyway, so the premise of this story is that the students of Wilbrook have been hand selected based on their exceptional ‘geek’ skill – Taylor is as a computer hacker.  They study their skill, and some other essential things, like martial arts, and there assignments are ‘covert’ tasks for corporations or government agencies.  Surely there must have been some kind of movie like this!!

So down to the actual delivery of the plot…  I personally didn’t get the appeal of Colt or the dynamics of all the students.  Taylor was likeable, but it also seemed easy not to invest in her story too much, her reason for happily staying at Wilbrook seemed weak.  I did enjoy the plot ideas for this story, but I think the delivery lacked in detail and content.  The drama and its climax were pretty safe, the outcomes predictable and seemingly uneventful.

The relationship development was text book and counter intuitive to Taylor’s values and experiences.   There was minimal impact of the teacher student dynamic on any of the players, and I think this could have built the angst in this story.  There were elements of the familial relationships that obviously had massive significance to the story, but seemed to be glanced over rather than developed to match their significance.

And as an observation – nothing to do with targeting this author specifically, but why are all bad boys in YA book Man whores – I think these stories that imply sex aplenty but never quite get there (obviously because of the target demographic) do themselves and their characters a disservice by primarily having the broken bad boy loathe women, or themselves or their childhood so much that they sleep with anything in a skirt – change it up I say, there are so many other traits that could make a bad, wrong side of the tracks, kinda guy, that still has sex, but is not painted as a whore – just an observation, not a story killer of course!

So my thoughts on In Too Deep – it was a pleasant YA read, I think that target demographic will enjoy it, and find Colt very appealing..  It was a enjoyable read!

3 ½ hearts.
